Trail Plot Update for 2023 - May 2023

May Update

One of the best features of the Arable Event is that the demonstration plots receive the same farm programme as everything else at Bradford Estates making them realistic on farm representations on how varieties perform in this region. This is a valuable indicator when your making autumn cropping decisions.

The demonstration site includes as previously stated it includes winter wheat, barley, and oats. Alongside hybrid rye, triticale and OSR. All of which have given Wynnstay great insights through the growing window on how the varieties perform which we are looking forward to sharing with you on the day.

Despite the dry February we have had a much different spring so far compared to last year, much wetter, milder and more challenging travelling conditions but we have managed to keep on top of timings ensure the treated and untreated plots will show some important differences.

Throughout the cereals we have seen a reasonable disease pressure which has allowed us to assess the varieties against each other, we will share more of this at the event. The wheats have seen a reasonable septoria tritici disease pressure. The barleys have seen varying amount of disease in the untreated plots based on the varietal genetic differences.

The seed treatment demonstration will give you as farmers an awareness of the available biological seed treatments available this autumn. We will be focusing on how they can improve your nitrogen use efficiency and increasing yield.

OSR at the time of writing the plots are in full flower and since last August we have been evaluating vigour, maturity, and stem stiffness, while there will be fewer differences in the field on the day due to the maturity of the crop, we will be able to give you an insight of how it performed throughout the growing season.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to the Arable Event and the demonstration site on June the 7th.
